stay online with outlook 2003

I just installed Outlook 2003 on a new Dell XPS. The probblem is, it won't
stay connected to the Net. I have a cable modem. It downloads e-mail just
fine but there's a little offline icon at bottom right after it grabs new
mail. I've tinkered around in options and even with the send immediately
button activated, it waits until a scheduled send and receive. I have that at
a 1 minute setting but I'd really like this program to stay connected as long
as it's open.
What am I missing?
Thanks!

Click on the file menu, and make sure to deselect 'work offline' .

Note - unless you are connecting to an Exchange server, your Outlook mail
accounts will connect, download/upload mail, then disconnect. They won't
stay connected to anything all the time.

Checking a POP or IMAP account every 1 minute is not a good plan. Every 5
minutes should suffice.
