Static IP, Remote access to Server, How to/ Thanks

I have laptop which I need to connect to our main office by remote access.
Either FTP or a remote access program.

Main office has Server with about 5 computers. Cable modem goes to Router.
The cable company has given us a STATIC IP.

Do I use as URL for access the Static IP? Can I then get into or by the
router to the Server?
Do I have to tell the router (which I assume gives DHCP IP numbers to
server? to other computers?) that I am me and have access? How do I do that?

Sorry this is perhaps elementary. I know Macs well but not Windows.

Thanks for help

What kind of "server" are you running at the office end?

A safe way to access files remotely is using a VPN or Secure Shell (SSH)
tunnel which will be encrypted, safe and secure. Here are some links to
software VPN solutions that you might look at...

If you want to use Remote Desktop to remotely access/control desktop PCs see
these pages...

Note you can also run Remote Desktop through the PPTP/OpenVPN/SSL-Explorer
VPN tunnels...

In all cases you need to setup port forwarding through any router you have
at the office to the static LAN IP of the server.

As far as calling the server from a remote site you call using the static
public IP of your router, ie. the IP assigned you by your ISP.
