startup/shutdown sound disabled xp and another question

for some reason my startup/shutdown sounds won't play in XP...think
what when I downloaded some xp tweaks, maybe it changed a setting in
the registry. They are enabled in the sounds and audio devices in
Control Panel. Also, in the device manager, under sound, video game
controllers, under SB Live series it says "legacy audio drivers" and
"legacy video capture devices" when I click the legacy audio
properties, there's nothing listen in the box that pops up...would
that cause a conflict with my SB live card??? I have bee having random
pc freezes where I have to end up pressing the power button to shut of
the pc...no response from the mouse or keyboard...also getting a ACPI
BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address error in
event viewer....I posted about that in a previous thread I wrote
earlier today...wondering if the illegal IO port might have something
to do with my soundcard or legacy devices...there's no uninstall for
the legacy drivers in device manager. Hope someone can help me out
here.

A trip to a good computer repair shop is indicated. You are experiencing
multiple problems, possibly hardware problems. It is very difficult to
diagnose, at long distance, the source of the cluster of problems you
report.

great...that's the solution??? a repair shop??? be my luck it's
something simple and they'll charge me an arm and a leg...I have been
doing Google searches on this and will continue to do so until I
figure it out..well if I can get my startup and shutdown sounds to
play again....every other system sound plays fine...it must have had
something to do with the tweak I installed earlier from some site I
went to about performance tweaks...

I get a similar problem after I've used iTunes.
Similarly if I use the built in player in "FrostWire".
To get my sound back to my system & Windows Media Player, I simply open up
MSN messenger, select "tools / Audio & Video Setup" & go thru the steps &
it fixes it.
Seems like iTunes won't "let go"?

Yep, that's the solution if your time is worth anything. That, or a
knowledgable friend to give you on-site help. As useful as google searches
can be, you need enough knowledge at the start to eliminate at least some
possible causes. If you don't have access to known good parts to swap in
and out of a problematical system the task of diagnosis is especially hard.
Your statement "I have bee having random pc freezes where I have to end up
pressing the power button to shut o the pc...no response from the mouse or
keyboard" indicates a hardware problem that may not be just a
missconfiguration, but component failure. (Or it could be something as
simple as dirty heatsink fins or an inadequate or failing power supply.)
Are you equipped to handle that kind of diagnosis? And the possibility that
you might choose to replace a component that does not need replacement only
to find the problem persists?

Also, if you continue to create multiple threads on essentially the same
subject, the information and replies get scattered and disorganized making
it even harder for you to get useful help here. More and more the problems
you describe indicate a hardware problem unconnected to the operating system
you use. You may have a combination of problems caused by your 'tweaks' and
by hardware failure. If that is the case, this newsgroup is not the best
place to get help as it is not focused on hardware.
