Startup Settings

When I boot up my computer, it seems that alot of programs have to load
before I can do anything.
Programs that I do not use often and wouldn't mind if I had to manually open
them from the Start menu when I need to use them.
The icons show up in the bottom right corner of my screen next to the clock.
How can I edit my startup settings so these programs do not load until I
open them manually?

An easy to use solution for examining startup programs:

http://www.windowsstartup.com/

A program requiring a little more expertise:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

Startup Inspector won't list everything, however it does have a handy
web-query to tell you what the listed items are, and whether or not they are
essential. Autoruns will give you *everything* but interpreting the output
can take a little more effort.

The preferred method is to go in the actual programs and turn off the
option to have them start at boot time. Most of the well written and
gracious applications make it simple an easy to turn off the auto start
option. For the other annoying programs you will have to resort to
registry edits. Some programs start as services so you may have to set
them to manual start in the Services Management Console. To open the
Sevices management tool enter services.msc in the Start Menu Run box.

For the really stubborn programs helper applications can make it easier
to turn them off. Autoruns by Sysinternals is a good tool for this. I
also like CodeStuff Starter:

The best programs default to NOT start with Windows and allow you to
turn the "feature" ON, but that's just my opinion.

You will get no arguments from me on that!
