How can I determine which programs are essential to the proper function
of WindowsXP? My system was slowing down to the point that I thought I
had a virus. Finally, I eliminated a bunch of programs in startup that
I thought were safe to remove and have improved the performance
dramatically. Now I would like to get rid of others to further improve
the way my computer runs, but I would also like to re-initialize those
that might need to run at startup. Can someone please tell me where to
find this information. Thanks.

No programs in the Startup Group, or the RUN Key in the REgistry are
"Essental to the proper function of Windows XP" However, they may be
essentiol to the proper function of other things...like your printer,
or sound card or some other component/program.
But, you can turn them all off, reboot and see if there's anything
missing, functional wise, if so you can turn it back on.

Start --> RUN --> type in MSCONFIG --> OK
Go to the Startup Tab, uncheck everything
Reboot...go back to MSCONFIG and turn on anything you need/want.
Do it one at a time, until you and your system are happy.

Here's a list of common startup items, and what they are associated with.

Even better, get their "ultimate troubleshooter" program. I buy it
for all my clients.
