Startup programs not loading anymore!

I have a weird problem which just started happening now.

Programs which are set to load at windows startup are not loading anymore at
startup. I have reinstalled some of those programs and set the options "load
at startup" but when I restart windows, they don't load. Why? I've also
noticed that if I put a program-shortcut in the Starup folder under
start-menu, that particular program will load, but not the ones which have a
inbuilt option like "start when windows starts".

I've checked with a utility called regsupreme, it lists all the programs
that load during startup (from registry etc etc) but there's suddenly no
program listed there!

Even if I manually set a program to set to load at startup, it won't startup
when I restart the computer.

I have XP/SP2 with all updates.

Please help, anyone?

Thanks.

Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab.

What applications are listed there?
Are they active (check marks) or inactive (empty box)?

That may help to identify what is going on.

Good luck

Notification area icons are missing at startup.

Try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play
Device Host service.

Thanks, but as I said the programs have disappeared from the startup list
(including msconfig list).

Also, this isn't the tray icon disappearance problem, it is that the
programs that start from the registry have gone missing.

Use RegSupreme to reverse whatever you did with it in the first place.

The thing is I have not removed any startup programs, so using regsupreme to
undo is not an option. Let me clarify again: All my startup programs don't
"stick" to being startup programs, even if I check the option "start with
windows" options in relevant programs.

And of course, you meant "increase" my computer's performace, right? :)

Thanks.

No. *I* meant nothing, that is a quote, read it again.

I find it amazing that more than one program's start with windows options do
not work.

I have the same problems, they disappeared, but I have the feeling this
started when I installed Diskeeper.

I have found the same fault myself.

I recently formatted my computer and a number of applications were
reinstalled. Approximately 4-5 reboots after these applications were
installed, all of a sudden the registry keys
HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN have both had all of
their entries removed. Strangely, the Startup program folder contents
are OK, so the startup programs in the Start Menu's Startup folder load,
but anything that hooks into the registry does not.

MSCONFIG shows the same - the Startup tab shows only three items (all
set to run from the startup folder), when there should be more than 10
items in total, the others launched from the registry.

I restored from a backup taken approximately 20 minutes before the fault
occurred, and monitored the keys using SysInternals' Regmon utility,
although I could not find a process that was attempting to modify these
keys.

I have managed to fix the symptoms by denying delete permissions for all
users, but I'm still not sure of the cause.

Any further advice would certainly be appreciated.

Edit:

Interestingly, the only google results I could find on this topic date
from August this year. It seems that this is a new problem that has not
been encountered before.

Could it be a new type of malware? (I think this is unlikely, as the
first thing I did after reformatting was installing Symantec Antivirus
and downloading the updates).
