Startup problems

I updated windows last night, after I restarted everything started going
crazy. When I restarted I noticed that the startup was taking an exceedingly
long time, I was using 95% of my 2gb of ram. I checked task manager, and
nothing added up to 2 gb of used ram. I had to manually turn off the computer
to get it to do anything, so I restarted in safe mode. I wandered through the
event log which showed several errors with dcom 1084 and 1068. There were
some other ones that were programs specific which I uninstalled but that
didn't fix the problem. Windows won't load Live Onecare, which I suspect may
have something to do with it, and won't load most MS programs during startup.
It won't run programs such as msconfig, backup and restore, etc about every
other reboot. Occasionally when I hit ctrl-alt-delete, it tells me it failed
to load the login process, so I can't run task manager.
Now the twist. Normally for me I would just reinstall windows and wipe the
drive clean. Unfortunately my company that I work for installed several
programs on a seperate account on this computer, along with a vpn. I now live
3000 miles from said company and erasing the programs is all but out of the
question. This is my personal computer so if I have to I will, but I would
rather exhaust all other possibilities. Thanks for your time.

How about doing a System Restore to the point just before you did the
update?

I tried that, using a set point before the updates, it restarted fine, but
same issues. I tried some virus scanners online to see if that might be the
problem, since one care won't work, but I can't manage to get those to work
either. My computer also will not shutdown now, just stays at the windows is
shutting down screen for hours on end. Its just really strange to me that
this happened after I updated, since I never had anything like this before.
