Startup Problem in XP - Till I hit Esc, Enter or space bar or I remove the Network Cable

Strange problem, as above, says it all. I get a pale blue XP wallpaper
background and it takes 5 minutes for the icons to appear and start-up
finish - however, if I remove the Network cable (to my Netgear ADSL Router
Wi-fi modem) or press either ESC, or spacebar or ENTER, then the icons
immediately appear and startup finishes.

Any help would be much appertained.

Thank you

Hi,

this seems to be a blocking synchronous operation depending on your
hardware/nic.
Try to use another nic or try disabling it, to find out whether this depends
on your
nic or not. But the thing with the keystrokes is very unusuall...

Did you install a connectivity software for your dsl ISP service? If so then
that might be the case, it's probably trying to auto connect to a webportal
during startup of your windows xp machine.

If not the case, check you anti virus software as it may also trying to
connect to a definition database that perhaps no longer exist and couldnt
connect to it...

GLuck!

To Kerem, Delbert and Rock,

Thank you or all your help and it seems to have worked. Particularly the
use of Configuration Tools to check each and every start up and systems
programmes. It seems that Start Normal in Configsys causes a problem but
when I went into Selective Start and unchecked a few non essential progress
it seemed to get fixed. Anyway, I believe I now have the tool and knowledge
to refine the fix if necessary. I am most grateful for your kindness.

I will also keep your suggestions handy so if I need to investigate further,
you have given me lots of options.

Regards
Kevin
