Recently a hard drive failed with my Win XP installation. I had a
compressed True Image backup and restored the installation onto
another hard drive using that application's boot CD.
When the system initially booted, only the background was displayed and
the mouse cursor. (The cursor could be moved.) I rebooted into safe mode
and the icons were displayed. I then restored to an earlier state using
System Restore, and upon reboot into normal mode everything seemed all
right. (So here I am.)
I remember seeing such a problem with Windows ME quite often. Win ME was
probably the worst OS of the 20th Century, if not all time. Win XP is
pretty good, and this is the only time I have seen the problem while using
it. Does anyone know what causes it?
