Startup overload

B

bill

I am experiencing an incongrenuity in my XP startup menus
and
would like to know if anyone has experienced this and can
offer some help.

When I use msconfig to look at the startup menu it shows
the
files listed in the Registry "run" key. When I take the
path
"programs-accessories-system tools-system information-
softare
environment-startup programs" I get the files listed in
the
Registry run subkey and also all of the files (exclude
folders)
listed in Windows\system32 (about 1000 or so). I suspect
this
is someway affecting performance, but cannot be sure.

A two line sample of the listing is
PROGRAM COMMAND USER NAME
LOCATION
lexbce lexbce.dll NT
AUTHORITY\SYSTEM startup
lexbces lexbce.exe NT
AUTHORITY\SYSTEM startup

I have looked in the REGISTRY with a find for NT
AUTHORITY and find
it as a value in several subkeys under
HKLM\system\controlset***\services\***.
I don't find anything in these values (when expanded) to
indicate
that the files in Windows\system32 are being called.

Any ideas anyone.

The worm "spybot" was in the system and 23 affected files
were
quarentined by NORTON. no change in this startup listing.
