startup menu black bar where graphic should be

Okay. This isn't a life-threatening issue, but it's starting to gnaw at me
that I can't fix it.
When I click "Start" and access my startup menu, there should be a graphic
and my name at the top of the menu.
However, what is there is a black bar. I've checked themes, start menu and
taskbar, and user accounts. Everything that I've checked tells me that my
chosen graphic and name should show up. Yet, I'm looking at a black bar.
Anybody have any ideas about possible causes?
Like I say, not life threatening, but I think I should know enough about
Windows to fix this, but I don't.
Thanks,
J

Okay. Followed the instructions per the link, using regedit. However, when I
got to the final step, the NoUserNameInStartMenu key wasn't there. Could be
the issue. How do I put it there?
Thanks.

1. Are you using the Welcome Screen/Fast User Switching?
2. Have you disabled Picture and Fax Viewer? If so: Go to
Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
3. Do/did you have Styles XP or the similar installed?

#2 generally clears this up.

Well, the mystery only deepens. I clicked the "start" button as processes
were loading after a reboot. The picture and my name are at the top of the
start menu until *something* loads. Then the bar goes black. I've tried
watching task manager processes loading to see what could be the issue, but
so far can't tell.
This is just beginning to gnaw at me.
