Startup Error Message

Hi Everyone,

I'm running a Compaq Evo N1015v notebook.
On starting my machine this morning, I was almost instantly shown an error
message as follows:-

"A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

This happened once before and my only solution at that time was to use the
system restore disks as supplied by Compaq, losing all my data. I'm
determined not to do that this time as I've now got my machine just as I
want it.
I'm running Windows XP Pro as installed by the Compaq restore disks, with
all the latest MS updates added. Compaq supplied a Win XP Pro disk and I've
tried a repair from it but it boots to a checking your hardware message then
just hangs.

Anyone got any ideas how to recover from this?

Thanks in advance

Test your hard drive with a utility from the drive mftr. Usually you
will make a bootable floppy and boot with it. Do a thorough test. It
sounds like your hard drive is failing, and no amount of tinkering with
Windows (software) will heal a hardware problem.

Any error reports in Event Viewer? If yes post a copy.

When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID,
Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click

"Don't Panic!"

Hi Malke

I tested the drive with Hitachi Drive fitness test and it came out healthy,
no faults whatsoever, even with the advanced tests.

I'm guessing its some sort of MBR or partition error, it isn't even starting
to load windows. I downloaded the floppy installation disks for XP and they
either ask for the repair disk (which I don't have) or to format for a new
installation, which I'm trying to avoid.

Hope you can think of something.

Perhaps the issue is with the connector on the motherboard then. If your
machine is under warranty, it might be a good idea to take it to a
Compaq official repair center and have them check it out.
