Thanks again for trying people.
If I switch the monitor on without the PC the screen remains black - there
are no messages. My system is a HP with a CRT monitor.
Every morning when I first switch my system on everything starts up and I
can actually work on it for up to about 5 minutes when suddenly my monitor
switches off, the computer remains on. I then switch my computer off by
pushing the computer switch and after waiting a minute I switch my system on
again the same as the first time only this second time it remains on and
works perfectly even if I switch it off and on again later the same day. It
is not until the next day that on my first try the same situation arises
again and my system won't work until I restart it the second time.
I believe it is not the monitor that is the problem but the computer that's
causing it. The only thing is I don't know why it is happening and how to
rectify it.

Are there any indicator lights on the monitor? I'm trying to determine if AC
power is turned off or if the video from the PC video driver is being turned
off. Powering on the monitor without the PC WILL leave the screen black,
however, on some CRTs a message is displayed that indicates 'no video is
being received'. When the failure occurs, I wanted you to not touch the PC
but turn the monitor off and then back on and let me know the result.

Thanks again Unknown and JS,

The monitor can be switched on and off without the PC, no messages show on
the screen.
As I suspect the problem is in the computer. As you suggest and I agree it
is worth a try I have now re-installed my HP monitor driver. I'll let
you know the result the coming day. If the problem still exists I'll do the
same with the NVIDIA driver.

The monitor driver replacement didn't help, the problem happened again
today. I will now work on the NVIDIA driver and see what happens. If that
doesn't help either I give up and hope the fault'll disappear one day just
as it appeared.
Thanks for your help.
Cillian.
