Starting XP in SAFE mode

I need to take ownership of a folder on my PC. I have all
the necessary instructions but I don't know how to start
XP in safe mode. Windows help says to press F8 when I get
the 'Please select the operating system to start'. I
don't get this message. When starting my PC it goes
straight to the desktop. How do I intercept it?

you just press the F8 all the way than you can go into
the safe mode.
