starting windows defender

Hello there - I finally managed to download and install windows defender, but
now I cannot start the darn thing. A window pops up and says "Application
failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender service
to stop. To start the service, restart your computer (which I did) or search
Help and Support on how to start the service manually." Does anyone have any
tips on how to get started? Thanks,

Defender is built into Vista so if you dl'ed and install the beta2, I
believe that's only for XP.

Defender installed when I installed Vista, but I too get the same error code.
Also get a box that states that a DLL is not loading properly.

Not that defender is really needed, but it would be nice if it worked.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Also, after a month, today Defender actually had a successful automatic
update. All the others failed so far until today. It updated today with
definition 1.14.1530.8 for defender KB915597. But after rebooting Defender
still will not start. I get the same error code 0x800106ba.

Have not seen this issue covered in the help files so far...

I have never got the defender working on XP Professional SP2 at my office.
But works fine on Vista and on XP Home SP2 at home.

If you go into task manager, select "services" tab, as well as the services
button. You will then be brought to a window with a list of "services."
Navigate to Windows defender, click on it, then on the top left, you should
see the option to start manually. Do that, and then open windows defender.
