Starting Services Issue *strange*

S

Steve Mold

I have a strange issue with a 2000 server + SQL that as just started
this week.

Any services that are started as the local account start fine but if
you use any domain accounts they won't start and I get the following
error.

The <programme> service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion.

Any other server on that domain will start a service fine with a
domain account except this one.

I've ‘DCpromo'ed it back down and this seemed to solve the problem but
after a while the some problem occurred.

Yesterday I took the box off the domain and into the workgroup then
put it back onto the domain this again solved the problem for a short
while.

The only other issue that cropped up is the control panel won't open
now!

The only software that as been recently installed is Tobit Faxware.

Any Ideas

Thanks

Hi Steve. I would run netdiag on it while it is a domain member. It could be a
dns issue. If it can not find a domain controller to verify the domain user
credentials, this type of error could possibly happen. --- Steve

Thanks I'll have a look.

I thought it maybe a group policy change taking place (due to it
working after the dcpromo and the machine rename) but no additional GP
have set.

One addtional example that you can't start as a service if you log on
as a domain account you can start the programme (as an app) but you
still can't start it as a service (even as the same user)

DNS seems fine

Hmm. I would use netdiag next time it happens looking for any failed tests that may
prove pertinent like kerberos or secure channel. --- Steve

I used Netdiag / Fix and it cleared up for a few minutes but the problem
resolved after a short time!

I've run netdiag again with a redirect so I've got a text file of the out
put.

Next I used the /fix option again and ran netdiag once more.

I now have two files before and after ,so I've compared this in windiff and
I have the following differences.

Hi Steve. I think you narrowed the problem down. However I am not sure
exactly why you keep getting the errors. I would suggest posting on the
win2000.dns or win2000.active_directory newsgroups. I think the group over
there have probably seen this before. A quick Google search found these two
articles, which may or may not be relevant. --- Steve
