after installing some software i restarted my computer. Upon start up i got
the error message

\windows\system32\config\system is corrupt or missing ..please insert the
setup and restart....press (r) upon restart.

The mesage went something like, it was quite long so i shorted it. The only
problem is that i am at college and my windows xp porfessional setup disk
bisically out of reach. I have looked through knowlege base to see if there
is a way around this problem, but i cant seem to find one. Can any one tell
me how i can possibly fix this problem without the disk.

Unfortunately, you will need an XP CD to repair the problem. Either
borrow an XP CD (where the version matches the one on your computer) or
take the machine to a good local repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA
type of store). Here are the repair steps:

With this error, when XP won't start, boot with the XP CD and go to the
Recovery Console. Type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit
