Starting XPpro/Sp2

This may interest someone.

I regularly test software and occasionally some form of corruption leads me
to effect a complete re-format and re-installation of XPpro.SP2/IE7 and
around 45 programs

Lately I started to have some rather odd effects and some programs either
opened and locked. And running XP's own FAX program resulted in the system
starting up but immediately closing down.

I tried "last known good configuation", Debug, and Safe Mode (which came on
OK but didn't help).

Somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered that it was possible that
after multiple re-formats there might be residual bits on the drive which
could corrupt.

So ran a full eraser program (MicroScope EraserDisk) with 3 scans (4 hours!)

I have now completed a full re-installation and, after a couple of weeks, I
have no problems whatsoever.

Is this situation well known?

Love to have comment please.

No, it isn't well known, and you may have damaged the drive itself in a way
and at a level that normal use does not normally reach. If you're doing
beta testing that causes corruption requiring drive wipes, you should at
least start with new partitions, not just formatting, and you should have
spare drives on hand.

Elsewhere I have explained that I use a single partition. I am aware that having the OS on one partition and programs on another is possible, but this is not always very satisfactory. Yes I have used Vista RC2 and when I had done a M% report I went back to XPpro/SP2/IE7. If, as you say, it is possible to recover data from a formatted drive, then equally this data might be corrupting.

If this is really the case, then a full security wipe is manadtory and I
used MicroScope EraserDisk and now I have a stable system
