start up problem

When I start up my XP Pro system, I get a light blue
screen telling me that one my disks needs to be checked
for consistency, you may cancel the check but its strongly
recommended that you continue. The problem is that it
hangs at 83% every time.

Question 1) how do I cancel it

I have had this problem before and resolved it by booting
off of the XP Pro install CD, going to a DOS promt and
running chkdsk /r manually on the drives. I've done this
successfully this time, but the boot up sequence does not
change.

Thanks,

Thanks, but it turned out that the drive letter
designation is different upon boot up then in the recovery
consule. So when I finally figured this out, it turned out
that one partition on the main hard drive was screwed -
chkdsk failed in the recovery console as well. Ran the
hard drive diagnostic from the manufacturer and the drive
is hosed, didn't even last a year. I'm dreading a complete
reinstall.
