Start up in XP Pro

In Win98/ME it was possible to have different startup options
depending on what config you wanted. e.g. for games you would load
very little to maximise memory etc which would be very different to a
normal startup config.

I know you can do hardware configs in XP depending on what hardware
elements you want but cna it be done for software? i.e. can things
like antispyware be stopped for some configs but allowed for others?

Any help would be much appreciated as it's becoming annoying having to
close lots of porgrammes to gain maximum memory and CPU power.

Any service that starts automatically will be running before any user logs
onto the computer. For user logon applications are managed by the profile
settings for start menu\startup in the user profile and the all users
profile under documents and settings . Also applications will be loaded for
all users by what is in the
HKLM\software\Microsoft\Windows\currentversion\run registry key. You could
try managing those user settings by modifying the individual user accounts
in their start menu\startup folder to contain those entries and removing
them from the registry and all users profile. Then your minimal user account
could be configured to have less startup items. If you want to attempt such
I suggest you backup any folders or registry keys you want to modify FIRST
so that you can at least get back to where you were. SysInternals has a free
program called autoruns that can show you where all the different
applications/services/etc start from. Msconfig with selective startup may be
another option to look at. Type msconfig in the run box to start it. ---

Thanks for that I'll try it...they must know that people use these
things so why make it so complicated and dangerous by messing with the
regs??
