I noticed after I installed mafee security suite 2009 last night, that now I

I actually may have figured out my problem. I went on mafee's site, and found
this:
I will try it and let everyone know if it is the answer and fix. However,
kinda sticks that I can not use my windows defender...
Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated!

Description
The 2009 McAfee consumer products for Windows Vista disable Microsoft
Windows Defender to improve system performance. Windows Vista users who have
installed the 2009 McAfee consumer products should not enable Windows
Defender. After Windows Defender has been enabled, the following error
message is displayed at every computer restart:

Solution
Disable Windows Defender.

Click Windows and then select All Programs.
Select Accessories.
Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator...
Type the following commands (NOTE: The space between = and " is required):

sc config WinDefend start= "disabled"
sc stop WinDefend

Press ENTER.

I believe you have found the correct answer. Why McAfee can't manage to do
what they suggest below as a part of their installation routine I don't
know.

In the case of Symantec Endpoint Protection, the installing user is given a
choice about whether or not to disable Windows Defender, with the
recommendation that they do so.

I Agree! A simple --please disable, or we will disable for you....sure would
have been nice. On the day of the April 1st "confilictor" virus scare....not
what I wanted to deal with first thing this AM...But it seems fixed. Guess I
lose the benefit of whatever it is Windows defender does!!

The 2009 McAfee, Norton, Symantec, etc. anti-malware suite product for
Windows Vista disable Microsoft Windows Defender to improve system
performance. Windows Vista users who have installed these products should not
enable Windows Defender

If that 'error' message appears, disable Windows Defender from startup
(Start \ Run \ msconfig),

or if you wanna enable Windows Defender, go (Start \ Run \ services.msc) and
then turn off automatic scanning (in Windows Defender)

I also had a problem after reinstalling McAfee. Upon startup, a window
appears that says - "application failed to initialize 0x80016ba ........."
It also said to start Windows Defender manually - I don't know how to do.

Is this the same problem? Do I really want to disable Windows Defender or
can I use both. If I can use both, what do I need to do?

I don't have first hand experience with current McAfee products, so I can't
say for sure. It seems to me that it IS the same problem. I think that if
you tried to start the Windows Defender service manually, it would fail with
that same error message.

I'm not clear whether your machine is running Vista, or Windows XP?

The way you would manually start the Windows Defender service is to use the
instructions in "SOLUTION" as printed below, but skip the first SC command
(the one with "disabled" in it) and make the second one read:

SC start WinDefend

If you are on Windows XP, you could also try Start, Control panel, add or
remove programs, highlight Windows Defender, and choose change, then I
believe reinstall. There is also a "more information", repair set of
buttons, I believe.

However, if the real issue is that McAfee is somehow disabling startup of
Windows Defender, perhaps by excluding it from some resource that it must
connect to to work, these commands are not likely to succeed.

Antivirus protection is far more important than antispyware protection--and
you've chosen McAfee as your antivirus vendor. Presumably, the product
you've installed also includes antispyware protection. I would wish that
McAfee communicated more clearly about this issue, but I would recommend
that if it is McAfee's choice that Windows Defender be disabled, that you
not work too hard to go around that choice--you chosen your doctor, follow
their orders. McAfee is saying that they can protect you as well as Windows
Defender did, and until that is proven untrue, I'd suggest going along with
it.

I don't like the way this seems to work, but that's my recommendation.

Thanks for the help, Bill.

I had also contacted McAfee tech support and they said to disable windows
defender which I did. But I still get the error message when I start up. I
am currently running basic Vista which I plan to update to the next version.
Will this help or is there something else I can do to stop the error message
at startup?

Did you do this part:

The third line down is crucial to the success of this procedure on Vista.'

Ah--you are running Vista home. I don't have much experience with this, but
I think that in order for this to succeed you may need to start in safe
mode, and log in as administrator, on most machines this account has no
password. There's an additional process to actually enable the
administrator account which I can't recount from memory and hope isn't
needed...

If you do Start, run, and type in "services.msc" without the quotes in the
run box and hit enter--what happens? You may well get an error message.

I had the same problem. I contacted McAfee Support and they gave me the
following instructions that worked. Click on Start... type in run and
enter...
type in msconfig and enter... under startup tab uncheck the windows
defender. Click apply then ok. Restart computer.
Hope this helps.
