start up error - nt detect not found

My Dell laptop latitude computer, running Win2000, won't
start up. I get an error message saying "nt detect not
found, invalid boot.ini file booting from
c:\winnt\ntdetect failed".

My computer has worked well in the past and I haven't
changed anything recently that I'm aware of.

I have run the Dell diagnostics that are built in to the
laptop (F12) and they all check out OK. Unfortunately, I
don't have the original system disks for Win2000 tom try
a re-install/repair.

Is the boot failure most likely a problem with my hard
disk?

Thanks for your assistance.

Your problem is easily fixed by doing this:
- Boot the machine with your Win2000 CD
- Select "Repair", then "Command Console"
- Type this command: fixboot

Unfortunately you do require your Win2000 CD.
Ask someone for a copy - sooner or later you will
need it again!
