recent programs do not show on the start menu any more i know there is a
registry key that restricts certain programs from showing but is there one
that allows all others

If you enabled the classic menu you'd see them all and if you enabled the
ability to drag and drop the items in the menu you'd be able to put stuff
you didn't want to see into a folder called something like, oh, "seldom
used" which is my own personal choice. No registry editing required and
pretty benign though if you have multiple users on the same PC then moving
about the links isn't really a good idea...

I don't tend to use the new start menu but when I do I can navigate to any
shortcut in there and right click it. The menu there has an option to pin it
to the start menu. This might be a feature on your system but it's been so
long since I've used the defaults... Well, not even my theme looks like XP
these days. Ah yes, someone in a Yahoo! IM tells me that's the behavior
without the software. That should manage it for you if you don't want the
classic option.
