Start Menu Not Launching Programs

I've seen this posted here and there but no solutions so I thought I'd ask
again. When you open a program from the "All Programs" list the apps lauch
fine. Then this app is added to the recently opened applications. However
if you try to launch these same apps from the recently opened applications
menu a lot of the apps don't launch and the start menu just closes. Apps
that this is happing to include Word 2000, Excel 2000, AutoCAD LT 2008
(Normal AutoCAD 2008 is fine). However, if I copy these same links to the
desktop (from the recently opened apps menu) the apps open fine here? This
is a clean install of Vista, no upgrade.

Ok, I've narrowed it down to shortcuts that don't point directly to the path
of the application in the "Target" field. For example, the Target for
Project Scheduler is Microsoft Office Project Standard and this shortcut
doesn't work in the recently used programs list. However, apps that point
directly to the executable work just fine. Hopefully this helps someone to a
solution to this bug?!

Solution is that there is a shell context Menu conflict with another program
installed on your system. Do "Method 2" from the following web site to fix
the problem!

Excellent! I thought this might be a shell extension issue. But thanks for the confirmation.

That did the trick for me, it was the nvidia extensions.

When I try and download the ShellExView software, I get a 'Forbidden Page'
message. This is from my home broadband connection and as far as I'm aware I
don't have any forbidden web pages.

Please help!
