Start Menu in Vista

I've always used the ability to build a list of heavily-used programs using
the start menu "classic view," by placing shortcuts to programs above the
"Programs" tree. I've added plenty of items to this list by dropping
shortcuts for them on the Vista Start Button. Previously I've been able to
drag and drop these items to put them in my preferred order (eg - I prefer
having the "New Office Document" shortcut at the very bottom of the list).

In Vista I can drag and drop these items to a new position during a session,
but after a reboot they always revert to an alphabetized list. Is there any
way to defeat this automated re-sorting of the start menu programs list?
Thanks!

Hi,

I recommend alternative start menu - Vista Start Menu
http://www.vistastartmenu.com
The main future of this program it's keep positions of items(but you
may sort by right click if you wish)

But ability to add items in main list available in Pro version. But
try freeware at first.

Thanks for your suggestion. I downloaded it but found it would only start
from the system tray. Clicking the Start Button stopped functioning. The
system tray location is too inconvenient and non-intuitive.
Cheers!

Personally I just pin my frequently used programs to the start Menu,
enduring they are always at the top.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

If they're really frequently used, just add them to the Quick Launch bar.

I like the bigger targets on the Start Menu. I put my (somewhat) less
frequently used apps on the Quick Lanuch bar.

I was about to write with exactly the same question, but the situation
is even worse than Tengu describes, because the automatic sorting occurs
at each login, not just each reboot. This is hugely awful. Doesn't
anybody know of some checkbox or registry key that means "I put the
entries on the start menu in a particular order for a reason, so leave
them alone"?

Thanks,

Scott

I don't seem to get the automatic re-sorting, the items just stay
where I put them, but I don't know if there is an option to control
this behavior.

In response to another post, if you want the quick launch behavior,
but like large icons, you can just choose View Large Icons from the
right-click menu on the quick launch toolbar to get larger icons.

Try this:
Right click on the Start button
Choose Properties
Select Customize on the Start Menu tab
Scroll down on the list box until you find Sort All Programs
menu by name.
Uncheck that option and OK your way back out.

If that option isn't selected, my apologies.

Hello,
Does anyone know how to defeat the auto re-sorting without download the
third-party software? It works good on the Wndows XP, no matter which order
you arrange it, it will just stay as-is, unlike the Vista, everytime you
restart, shut down, log-off and back on it will re-sort by it self, very,
very annoyning...
