Starnge symbol

Why do I get a strange symbol, "pilcrow" I think it is called, in my word
documents. It appears randomly and when I hit Enter or Return?

Because this feature is switched on. You can toggle it on and off on the
toolbar. It looks like the pilcrow sign! You can also go to Tools | Options
and see Paragraph marks untder the Formatting section.

Eddie:
These are print controls. Indeed as Rae said you can toggle them
on/off by the show/hid button. However, it is good to get used to have
it ON. In the beginning it is somewhat disturbing, I admit, but w/ this
ON you see what you'r doing. For instance, you can see whether you
started a new line (hooked arrow) or a new paragraph (pilcrow), tabs
(looks like an arrow pointing to the right), etc.

It doesn't appear randomly; it appears, as you say, when you press Enter. It
indicates a paragraph break. See
