Stange behaviour

Can someone please explain

I have a pictures folder which I minimised with the box second from top
right.

When I reduced the width, instead of all the pictures remaining visible with
a scroll bar, some pictures went off the screen

The normal behaviour is this
Maximised

| 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
|11 12 13 14 15 etc

Minimise
|--Visible on screen--|-Scroll bar-|
| 1 2 3 4 5|---------------|
| 6 7 8 9 10|---------------|

What happened was this

|1 2 3 4 5|-Scroll bar-| 6 7 8 9 10
|11 12 13 14 15|---------------|
etc

So pictures 6 to 10 were off the screen and could not be scrolled to

What I did next was to copy all the pictures to another folder. This worked
OK, so I deleted the original and renamed the copy to the SAME NAME as the
original. When I did this, the behaviour returned. I then changed the name
by one character different from the original, and it worked properly again.

A restart did NOT alter this behaviour

What is happening?
Can I ever use the original name again?
Or will it forever be haunted with this strange behaviour?
Will a reboot help?
