possibly you can figure
something out by opening
a cmd window and enter the
following command & criterion:

powercfg/?

use the term at the
computers website
and intel's website too
and see what results
show up with the
criterion above.

presently, i prefer
hibernation either with
a click or when i close
the lid. here is the command
for hibernation:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState m2

there is a similar one for standby
too, but don't have the code.

so the other criterion you
can google for is:

powerprof.dll

or

setsuspendstate

let us know what you figure out.

Hi,
This happens too frequently and would like to resove this problem.

When I try to go into Standy, nothing happens on the screen (wait forever),
so I press the Power button for a second and then all the icons disappear
and I am left with the wallpaper. Still doesn't go any further (mouse is
dead) so I am forced to do a forced shutdown by holding the power button in
untill it shuts down instantly, which is not the way to turn a computer off.
Sometimes this will also initiate a Reboot after the forced shutdown.

Anyone had this problem? This also happened on a computer I just replaced
and now happening on this less than a week old Core2Duo computer.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks, Bob

Go back to the seller unless it was a yard(boot) sale ?

it's seems kind of odd,
but there has been a few
posts this week with similar
issues.

might be a update from
microsoft or something.

you try something quick
and easy by making a
shortcut with this line:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState m2

if you click on the resulting
shortcut your system might
hibernate.

if not then maybe running
from the run command
might help:

sfc /scannow

Hi,

I forgot to mention that this is happening on both my desktop computers, not
a laptop. I'm beginning to think there is conflict with a program I have
installed that is interfering with the Standby process as it happens on both
my old and new (1 week old) desktops.
I have gone into the desktop Power Properties and selected Hibernation but
it still doesn't appear as a choice when going into Start, Turn Off
Computer, just Standby, Shutdown and Restart appear.
Might have to live with this annoyance.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi,
I tried the string you showed below and the computer still acts the same
way. It looks like something I might have to live with.
I have had previous problems created with MS Windows updates (conflict with
HP Scanner driver) and perhaps this is a similar problem.
Thanks for the help,
Bob

that was very kind of you

and look forward to offering
it as a possible solution for
similar issues like yours.

Doesn't seem to be the case on my computer. I have both, shut down HD and
Standby set to never and when I click start ---turn off computer-- then
standby, it immediately goes into standby.

What are the settings in power in your BIOS? Do you have APM (advanced
power management) ?

?

mine, too.

but the point is that
it is a reasonable option
to exercise, as cycling
the feature may fix whatever
might be particularly ailing the
power system.

Hi all,

Well I just solved my problem and at the same time learned something new
after working the past 15+ years with computers.

You cannot put the computer on Standby IF in the Power Options Properties
"Never" is selected for both Turn off hard disks and System standby.

Just remember, the Start, Turn off computer, and then Standby option will
not override the Power Options set for "Never".

Thanks for you help and hope this helps other who have experienced the same
irritation problem.

Regards, Bob

Hi all,
I am a bit embarrassed, as my previous explanation only worked once and now
it is back to its old tricks refusing to go into Standby. Back to square
one...very frustrating as now even the monitor will not shut off after the
10 minutes it is set for. As someone else mentioned, I had always set the
HDD and Standby before on the previous machine, to Never and it would always
go into Standby using Start, Turn off computer, Standby.
The computer builder (a reputable company in business many years) was
boasting that this is one of the newest Intel motherboards (DQ3510J) and the
first one they have used so far, if that has anything to do with this
problem.
I am also searching the MS KB to see if this is a reported problem.
Thanks, Bob

Hi everyone again,

This is my last post to this string as this time I truely found the cause of
my Standby problem, a backup program called Genie Backup Manager V 8.0 that
started when Windows XP started and was continuously running in the
background (bottom right of the task manager bar). I removed this from the
Startup menu and the problem disappeared so if anyone else has this problem
and runs Genie Backup Manager, this is likely your problem.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to make suggestions.
Regards, Bob

Big question is where did you get the garbage 'Genie Backup Manager'? Why
would it run in the background?

That's surprising, Bob as I have my Power Options set to "Never" & have no
trouble going into Standby & Hibernation.

Well, it really isn't "garbage" as I have used it for a couple of years now
but Version 8 has this new "monitior" feature that starts up when Windows
starts and it is the problem. Other than this, it is a pretty decent program
and not to be scoffed. Thanks for your opinion.
