Spywareblaster - is it better than SpyBOt?

J

Jan Il

Hi -

Just a question...however, if this is not proper for this ng, I'm sorry,
just let me know.

I have heard a good deal about Spywareblaster, but, not sure if it is better
than the SpyBot or Adaware that I now have. Has anyone had any experience
with this program? Is it indeed better than SpyBot and/or Adaware?

Best regards,
Jan :)

Spybot S&D and Ad-aware 6 remove parasites after they have installed
themselves. SpywareBlaster immunizes your system so that parasites cannot
install themselves in the first place, and is recommended by the Spybot S&D
developers.

Use all 3 and you are well protected against parasites, and all 3 are
freeware.

It's a totally different product.

Snipped from the Spywareblaster FAQ:
#1) What does SpywareBlaster do?

-Unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster doesn't scan for and clean spyware.
Instead, SpywareBlaster provides protection against spyware ever installing
and can also prevent spyware from running if it is already installed on your
machine! SpywareBlaster can also protect against spyware/tracking cookies
(this cookie protection function requires Internet Explorer 6 or above - the
spyware protection mechanism even works on Windows machines without Internet
Explorer).

#2) How does SpywareBlaster's protection work?

-SpywareBlaster works by settings "kill bits" in the registry. These "kill
bit" registry entries are set for the spyware ActiveX CLSIDs (unqiue IDs
that identify an ActiveX control). When a kill bit is set for a CLSID, the
ActiveX control that uses that CLSID cannot install itself via your browser,
nor can it run if it already installed. Microsoft sometimes uses these kill
bits for fixing Active-X security holes.

There's more.

Download a copy (if you use IE) and install it as a *compliment* to SpyBot.

I have downloaded a copy of the SpywareBlaster and installed it. However,
when I tried to open it I got an error message that said;

MSCOMCTL.OCX
Runtime error; 339
file missing

Well, yep, it's missing alright. I did a Search and can't find it any such
file where. I have no idea what the file is, but, as soon as I can get the
program working and updated, I'll give it a go for a while and see how it
works. It appears to be a very low maint. program, in that you just need to
update the files regularly and it does its thing without need for any other
user attention. Silent..but deadly...<g>

Thanks again for your help.

MSCOMCTL.OCX is a windows ActiveX system file. Which version of Windows do
you have?

Hi Jan II.......

You didn't 'RTFM'.......grin. If you go to the following page, and go
to the bottom, you will see that this can be expected and there is a
download there to handle it.

Naughty girl.....you didn't read the instructions!! (G)

Ah...yes, you're right. And, I know I can always count on Auntie to pin my
ears when I slag. <big grin>

Been fighting a dragon for the past week or so with major problems with the
Office 2000 and OXP Upgrade. I've only managed about 5 hours sleep the past
several days, trying to get it resolved in order to meet deadlines for
Chistmas. Finally got it resolved this afternoon, but, as a result of all
the troubleshooting and researching, there are a few gaps in the old
thinker, which seems to suffer from CRS more often these days.(lol)

Thank you for the reminder and thump on the noggin. I'll add this
information to my resource library, so I don't forget if I need to do this
again. <g>

Cheers,
Jan :)

I downloaded and istalled it. Seems nice and does not eat your
resources, but how can it work? How can it prevent nasty files
installing in my machine? How does it block cookies?

I'm not that up on the tech stuff of how it all works. It just does from
what I hear. I haven't had it long enough to be able to speak from my own
experience as to how well yet. It's good to now that it does not use a lot
of resources as is on duty all the time.

As far as blocking cookies? Hmm...I'm not sure, but...I think all those are
somehow redirected to a special bin on Sesame St. <bg>

Jari

Jari, go to the help file and read the section "original FAQ". That explains
what you're asking.

Thanks, that clears up a bit, but those CLSID-things are something I
am not so familiar with. But the most important thing is that it
works.

Hi Jan,

I think it may boil down to personal preference. Each program tends to
identify different files and programs as "spyware", at least in my
experience. I have not used Spywareblaster, but I have used Adaware and
Spybot extensively and find Spybot to be exceptional. It does tend to
have some slight performance issues such as hanging every now and then,
but other than that, I love it.

SpywareBlaster is *not* just an aletrnative to SpyBot. It works by
blocking kmown spyware from being installed in the first place.

They do different things. Read about them on their websites.
I use both and Adaware.
