SPyware/Malware help needed

Guest

HI All,

I'm hoping someone can help me. My computer has been infected with Spyware
and I keep getting this pop-up notice from my start up tray saying "Your
computer is infected! Dangerous malware infection was detected on your PC.
The system will now download and install most efficient antimalware program
to prevent data loss and your private information theft. Click here to
protect your computer from the biggest malware threats."

NOw, I believe this is itself a version of spyware. I have run Microsoft
Anti-Spyway, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Trend Micro's spyware and they claim that
everything is clean. The two items that keep popping up are Vcodec and
Smitfraud-C, but Spybot cleans them...but they keep coming back.

Does anyone know how I can clean my computer of these programs?

Thank you!!

Two part reply..

Perform Part 1 then perform Part 2.

It is suggested that you execute each tool in Normal Mode then in Safe Mode.

If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to JRE
Version 5.0. There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being exploited.
It is possible that is how you got infected with malware.

Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of Sun Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed and Sun Java JRE Version 5.0 Update 6
be installed ASAP.

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Use the alternate if the first two parts are ineffective...
Note: Alternate only for Win2K, WinXP and Win2003 Server

Part 1
-----------

Use noahdfear's SmitFraud and SpyAxe removal tool -- SmitRem.exe
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click counter/click.php?id=1

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic36868.html

Part 2
-----------

Download SmitFraud.exe from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/SmitFraud.exe

Execute; SmitFraud.exe { Note: You must accept the default of C:\McAfee }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to enable WGET.EXE to download the needed McAfee related files.

Execute; c:\mcafee\clean.bat
{ or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c:\mcafee }

A final report in HTML format called C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML will be generated. At the
end of the scan, it will be displayed in your browser (Opera, FireFox or Internet Explorer).
It is suggested that you move the report out of c:\mcafee before performing another scan.

Alternate:

Secured2K's SpyAxe, PSGuard, Smitfraud, Sinnaka and Alemod removal tool.

http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/AntiPuper.exe

http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=65072

Please Copy and Paste the contents of the HTML Log file; C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML in your
reply.

HI David,

Your solutions worked great. I seem to still be having a problem with a
winlogin.exe file that causes a blue screen, but since a re-start, I haven't
seen it again. If it appears again, I'll post on this board. But for now,
I'm on the internet with no problem.

Thank you!!

That's a natural part of the solution under "certain" conditions. No worries mate !

Glad you have it all sorted out.

Dave,
Thanks for your post. I followed very similiar instructions from Trend Micro
(pasted below). They did not work for me (i.e. Spyaxe still there, in fact,
it was in system tray in safe mode). Would you suggest any modifications?
Please note that I did install the update from MSFT KB 912919, from Windows
Update.
Thanks,
Mike

TrendMicro Instructions:

I understand that your machine was hit by this "Spyaxe" parasite and that
you are constantly receiving annoying notifications saying that your PC is
infected.

To assist you further with your concerns, kindly visit this helpful link
below to download the spyaxe remover tool.

http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click counter/click.php?id=1

When you visit the URL above, a window will appear and it will ask you what
you want to do with the file. Select SAVE, and choose DEKSTOP so we can
easily find the tool later on.

Once download is complete, just look for and double-click the SmitRem.exe to
automatically extract this file into a folder of it's own. Once extacted, you
should see a new folder named SmitRem folder on the desktop.

Now, we now need to run the removal tool in SAFEMODE.

To access Windows SAFE MODE, please do the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After the memory test and BEFORE the Windows' loading screen
ppears press F8 repeatedly
3. If successfully performed, a menu will be displayed. Choose
'Start Windows in Safe Mode' or 'Safe Mode'

Once in Safe Mode, simply double left click on the SmitRem folder to open
this.

Once opened, look for and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the
removal process. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will
disappear and then re-appear again --->> this is normal.

Wait for the tool to complete and this will also initiate a Disk Cleanup to
finish processing --->> this may take a while; please be patient.

Follow the prompts on screen and allow Disk Cleanup to complete.

(*Note: XP users using the XP theme may ex-perience a change to the Classic
Windows theme. This can be changed on the themes tab of desktop properties.)

Once completed, reboot back to the regular/normal mode by restarting the
machine normally.

Upon reboot, you can reset your desktop background.

Then initiate a windows update by visiting the helpful link below to avoid
reinfection.

www.windowsupdate.com

Once microsoft updates has been installed successfully, please restart the
computer for all the settings to take effect.

Please let me know of the results at your earliest convenient time.

VERY IMPORTANT: In order for us to have a history of our correspondence,
please do not delete the subject and the contents of this email.

Thanks for choosing Pc-cillin and have a Great day!

The following tool was just updated for that malware. Download the *newer version* and
re-execute the process.

Download SmitFraud.exe from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/SmitFraud.exe

Execute; SmitFraud.exe { Note: You must accept the default of C:\McAfee }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to enable WGET.EXE to download the needed McAfee related files.

Execute; c:\mcafee\clean.bat
{ or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c:\mcafee }

A final report in HTML format called C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML will be generated. At the
end of the scan, it will be displayed in your browser (Opera, FireFox or Internet Explorer).
It is suggested that you move the report out of c:\mcafee before performing another scan.

That worked! Can you please tell me what was change (e.g. registry entried,

Meanwhile, my log below.

Thanks again,
Mike

Nice clean report McAfee log file !

There are several changes made. More EXE running processes such as "SpywareStrike.exe" were
killed. NetWrap.dll was unregistered and erased. Registry entries removed and the folder
c:\program files\SpywareStrike cleaned of files and hopefily the folder removed.

A bunch of stuff was done :)

Dave,

I had Spyware Striker as well. I have also followed the programs listed,
however, after doing all of this my system looks like the classic look in 98
SE. Also I cannot for some reason run the aolsetup program for the instant
messenger... any thoughts?

None for AOL...

The system is in Classic View ?

Right Click on the Desktop, choose appearance and then themes. Look for Windows XP.
