spyware blaster vs. ms antispyware

Spyware Blaster

Microsoft Antispyware Beta
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default
.mspx

Which of these two packages do you recommend? Their
descriptions are similar to me.

SpywareBlaster prevents new infections. MS Antispyware does that
and also provides real-time, on demand and scheduled scanning for
spyware. It is very effective in my experience and a good
complement to the other tools around such as SpywareBlaster,
Adaware and Spybot S&D.

If SpywareBlaster and MS Antispyware were installed would that be akin
to having two AV products installed and active? I realize I could
disable real-time protection on one of them, or is Spyware Blaster not
real-time protection?

SpywareBlaster works by making settings in the system registry that
prevent infectors from being installed. It does not run in the
background on your PC.

MS Antispyware is much more like an AV program and has real-time
checking, scheduled system scanning and automated updating.

IME the two can co-exit happily.

Actually, they are not even close. Spyware Blaster is not a spyware
scanner. It proactively adds kill bits to the registry to keep
spyware from installing itself. Well, at least theoretically.

Can you expound? I don't know what kill bits are and the webpage
doesn't have much information.

Use them both. I have since the MS product became available. They both
work on spyware from different views, with SB blocking registry entries for
known spyware, and MS product acting as a scanner and real time protector
against browser setting changes, startup program changes, as well as
installation of spyware.

Unlike some anti-virus programs which have difficulty coexisting, most
anti-spyware programs get a long just fine. And becuase the different
software companies have various methods for discovering new threats and wont
always find the same things at the same time, it's almost mandatory to have
more than one application for the best level of protection.

Technically, I don't know how the kill bits actually work. I believe
they approximate the changes to the registry that spyware would make
when it installs itself, thereby blocking the damage from taking place.

The one that is NOT a Beta version. ;-)
Which one would that be then? MS Antispyware is just a rebadged version
of Giants package.

Yes but i do beleive that SpySwepper v4.01 is better than Microsoft's
Product.
