Spy Ware issue?

L

Leesa

Hi,
Having problems with my Presario 900 laptop running
Windows xp Pro. Tend to think it's being taken over by
spyware even though I use SpySweeper to protect it. Whole
range of weird issues. Slow, info being passed on modem
even though I am not accessing a webpage or email, etc...

I am looking for a list of processes that normally run in
the task manager on WindowsXP. This is what is currently
running on my system and I am not sure what half of them
are. I would like to find a list of what normally should
be there and what it does.

locator.exe
inetinfo.exe
notepad.exe
alg.exe
SpySweeper.exe
msmsgs.exe
enbiei.exe
spolsv.exe
mslaugh.exe
teekids.exe
taskmgr.exe
explorer.exe
svchost.exe - system
svchost.exe - local service
svchost.exe - network service
svchost.exe - system
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
smss.exe
System
System Idle Process

Every time I am online (dial up) I keep getting these
popup windows telling me to go to sites like
winupdate.net, windowspatch.info, winupdates.info, etc....
I think this is all tied together.

Thanks. Leesa

Leesa:

You may wanna try upgrading Norton anti virus 2004
trial or getting full thing and will do a full system
scan. It resolved my issues.

thanks,
Brian

I should have added:please go to the windows update site
and patch after you have cleaned all infections
present. You are extremely lucky to have got away with
just Lovesan...unless,the AV scans turn up something
worse.At least,enable the inbuilt XP firewall,too...

Thanks!!!! You guys are a life saver! It found 4 files
from the blaster worm and deleted them.

I'm not very happy with Norton at this moment.... I have
the paid subscription and do auto updates and do a live
update about once a week. When I started to have problems
a couple weeks ago I did a complete system scan 3 days in
a row and came up clean. Then my system crashed and I had
to reload the OS 3x to get it to semi work then finally
did a new install. What a headache.

I also use the spy sweeper and mail washer. How much
protection can you run and still be able to use your
computer?

Really appreciate your help. Computer is running much
better already. Leesa

Until this happened I did keep up with the new patches
about once a month or so. Dial up updates are no fun...
Now that I did a new install I went to the update page and
scanned for needed updates. Had like a years worth, hours
of download time. I tried anyway and most all the
downloads failed. Would that be due to the blaster worm?
Is there an easier way to get updates instead of
downloading the 20 or so that were listed. I think there
was only one patch that had to be done seperately.

Thanks.

First I would get rid of spywsweeper and mail washer. Then i would go to
www.lavasoftusa.com and download AD-Aware and use this program for removing
spyware. OR you could use the next best or = best to ad-aware ,Spybot. Dont
know there web site off hand but just type it in google and it will give you
the link..

If you are using Norton - remember it only remove viruses and you do need
to keep it updated. It is also good to use a alternate virus scanning
program such as web base scanning from www.housecall.antivirus.com or
pandasoftware.com . These both are excellent online scanning programs.. Any
virus program must be kept updated or it won't do any good for you
computer...
so best way to keep the computer clean is to
1. delete cookies and temp files about once a week
2. run a spyware program and keep it updated also..
3. run a firewall program such as Sygate which is free from the internet
(just type in free firewall program n Google.
4. Keep windows updated with all patches and you should have minimum
problems..
by the way if you dont want to pay for a virus program there is a great free
one called AVG . just go to Google and type in free virus program and
bingo!! there you go

Happy surfin!!!

Bruce,
I thought you weren't supposed to apply the Blaster patch
until you had installed XP SP 1a?

How about the URL of the express version of XP SP 1a,so
at least Leesa can press "resume" when her ISP drops the
connection?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Spybot Search and Destroy

Lavasoft AdAware

Randy,I can't imagine why you'd advise anyone to ditch
Spysweeper.By all accounts,it is excellent.At least,don't
ditch it until the paid for license expires!

key , this was a while ago and dont remember which one. had to do 307545 and
then a manual system restore of the computer . this happened about a year
ago on a test machine.. good thing too!! never had a problem with ad-aware

YES... What's that URL? Just spent 3hrs trying to
download the latest update that needs to be installed by
itself. Don't know what happened, ISP didn't drop me but
the download stopped (no modem lights for more than 5 min)
and it never finished or installed. Need to start again.
I'll look up that site for the CD updates.

Is there some reason why they can't do a ZIP file? I
needed 44 updates = 55Meg.

I'm still getting those pop-ups: www.windowspatch.info
Does that have to do with one of these viruses. I can't
find and fix the Sasser worm until I get this update
installed. I'll try again. Thanks for all your help!

Thanks. Leesa

No,don't be sorry.I was just intrigued at the reasoning
behind it.You have my sympathy. If it messed up your
computer,it's more than understandable.

for the processes that are welcomed in task manager, try this

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmc_str_elqj.as

or search microsoft for something like csrss.ex
