Spontaneous shut down

I have windosw XP professional running on a Dell Lattitude C540 lap top. It
runs great until I go on vacation for a while, like a week, and don't boot it
up the whole time. Upon return I fire it up and it runs for a few minutes
then spontaneously shuts down, no error message, nothing, just completely
shuts down. I try to restart it, both in safe mode, and normal mode, and it
gets to various stages of rebooting then shuts down again. It can't be a
virus because I don't even have it up long enough to check any emails. Any
suggestions?

Have you ruled out the battery or a bad power adapter?

I think so. I've attempted to start up with two different batteries and with
power adapter only and it seems that no matter which power source I use I get
the same problem.
