Spontaneous Log Off

Hi,

I work on serveral Windows XP machines. My main work one has a wierd thing.
Once every week or two, I'll be typing away and programs will suddenly start
closing like I had Logged Off (it only happens when I'm banging away at the
keyboard). However, there is no confirmation dialog box first asking if I'm
sure I want to log off. Is there some key combination I might be hitting
that initiates an un-confirmed Log Off, Restart or Shut Down? Any ideas?

Shutdown is...
%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0

I doubt that you are typing this by accident.

Sounds like the system may be overheating.

Have you tried opening the case and blowing
the dust out...especially checking the fans to
be sure they are running.

The thing that springs to mind immediately is that you may be ignoring
WindowsUpdate recommendations to reboot (or subconsciously dismissing them)
until they get the idea that you've allowed the required reboot (normally
there's a ten-minute alarm, which can be extended?)

I am having the same problem. It just happened for the second time and I
remembered that your post was here.

To the 2 respondents -- the system is logging off, not re-booting.

Hi,

It is a few months old Dell Vostro with no upgrades. It is not a sudden
black screen reboot. It is an orderly shutdown that is blocked by
applications that have unsaved files. I just click "Cancel" in one of
those, and I remain logged in.

Hi,

No, I have Windows Update set to "Notify me but don't automatically download
or install them." In fact, I had already did Windows Update via IE this
morning when it happened this afternoon.
