Standard remedy for this is to reinstal the video driver i.e.
1. Identify the video card (display adapter) and download the
manufacturer's latest driver for your OS. Write down its filepath.
2. In / Control Panel / System / Device Manager remove the
display adapter(s) and reboot.
3. Follow the prompts to instal video driver(s). Use / Browse to
point to the correct filepath if you need to.

Alternatively, in / Device Manager / display adapters, you can
for each Right Click and / Properties
then / Drivers and "update driver."

Repost here with results if this does not cure your problem.
There is also microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware.

It would help to know the monitor and video card manufacturers but... Is the
split having the left part of the normal screen (Start button) just to the
right of the big line and the right part of the normal image (system tray
and clock) immediately to the left of the big line? If so, you are going to
either have to adjust the monitor's sync or horizontal placement controls or
do the same with the video card's controls.

perhaps, the monitor
is the casualty of an
internal problem,

since the current monitor
is showing some signs
of failure.

you might try to double
check the monitors on
a different system.
