Spelling Checker Uncooperative

The user dictionary is located at
C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail
it's named UserDictionary.lex
and is a text file that can be edited.

\AppData is normally hidden

In the newer Windows Live Mail, the user dictionary is easily edited from
within the program.

Go to Start then "Computer"
Your main hard drive is given the letter C. Double click on the C drive.
Then click on the folder name Users.
Then the folder that has your name on it. (On some computers this is called "Owner" or some thing similar if you did not get to put your name in as the user.)
Then open the folder called "AppData"
Then open the folder called "Microsoft"
The the folder called "Windows Mail"
in that folder you will find a file called "User Dictionary.lex"
Right click on it and choose select program to open the file and select "Notepad" as the program.

If you are not familiar with navigating the file structure on your computer's
hard drive, you will be much better off upgrading to Windows Live Mail,
since it includes the ability to edit the custom dictionary:
http://download.live.com/wlmail

"An error occurred while the spelling was being checked." After a short
power failure (2 or 3 seconds) while Windows Mail as open and being used,
this message now appears over each and every email I send. I have reset the
default language to English, but that doesn't remedy it. Does anyone have
any ideas?

Thanks much.

I had this problem, exactly, and with the assistance of this thread, I fixed it. I tried changing the language - no effect. I tried deleting the UserDictionary.lex file - no effect. I found, in the same folder, a file called UserDictionary_IgnoreSession.lex - and deleted that. That fixed it. The spell checker works again. I hope this will be of help. Regards, DennisS

Hi Doug,

I had the exact same problem and tried everything that you have tried. Then
I tried deleting not only the UserDictionary.lex file but also the files
UserDictionary_ChangeSession and UserDictionary_IgnoreSession
Once you re-open mail these files are re-written and the spellchecker worked
for me.

Good luck

Dave - thanks to you and Doug Parrish I fixed my problem too.
I had trouble finding the hidden \AppData so I used advanced search and
found the three files. Did a rename of each file and reopened mail and it is
working like a charm.
Thanks again guys!
