Spell Checking

After re-loading Win XP Home, I am unable to use the spell checker. I get
the msg "An error occurred when spelling was being checked". How do I get my
spell checker back? Thanks.

It's for Outlook Express. I have Microsoft Word Installed. It had worked
previoously until the re-format.

There's an article in the MS KB about how to fix this. I thought
I had a bookmark but I can't find it. So, search the KB first.

The last time I had this problem, I found that the file
csapi3t1.dll was somehow missing. Installing MS Word or MS Office
AFTER you've established your OE6 set-up is supposed to
automatically install this file but it didn't for me. It goes
into c:\Program Files\Outlook Express. If you can't find it in
the MS KB article, Google for it.

Good luck!

If your are using Office / Word 2007, then Microsoft has "broken" the
Spell Check. The newer version is not compatible with Outlook Express
and you need to add a stand-alone Spell Check.

You get a program that inludes a spell checker. The OS does NOT
provide one.

I see my sig is quite apropos here, sadly. Thanks for the headsup
should I have decided to upgrade to Office 2007. Is this an
example of classical sloppy MS debugging that may eventually be
repaired or did they intentionall "break" it? If the former, has
a fix been promised for those affected? If the latter, does MS
sell a spell checker or really want you to buy Outlook and
abandon OE altogether?

And, just out of curiosity, I'm out-of-touch, what stand-alone
spell checkers are available, whether free/shareware or
commercial?

Thanks.

Microosoft does not seem to be willing to fix the Spell Check in OE
since they would not support OE anymore (in the newer versions of
Windows.) As of Vista, the email client is now named Microsoft Mail,
which looks / feels like OE but have SPAM filter built-in. Too bad
the will never be a port back to XP.

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some languages in Outlook
Express 6.0 after you install the 2007 Microsoft Office system:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932974

Office 2007 breaks OE's spell check. Downloading a free spell check is the
simplest way around this.

Vampirefo:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952

TinySpell:
http://www.tinyspell.m6.net/ (Checks the spelling as you type).

Australian English Spell Check
(Also suitable for other English speaking countries.)

If you have a previous version of Office, see this:

I know that but also OE was able to hook into Word's Spell Check but
as of Word 2007, MS broke this "link" and will not fix it. Word's
Spell Check "seems" work correctly with Vista's Microsoft Mail.

Vista's Windows Mail has its own spell check and does not use Word.

When Office 2007 was being developed, there was no OE team to confer with as
they did in the past since OE is a defunct e-mail client. (And Windows Mail
is right behind it). This is one reason, or so I'm told, that created this
situation.

And let's remember the millions of OE users that never had an Office
program, including myself, and have always relied on a third party spell
check. No tears on my cheeks. <wink>
