spell checker not working in some documents

The spell checker is not working in some of my documents.

When I try to invoke it I get the message "Cannot find proofing tools for
German". Also my quotes are displaying in the European format.

So somehow these ocuments have been formatted or configured for German
/European use.

I don;t know how this happened. Can someone tell me how to reset to the
Office defaults (USA)?

If the problem is affecting only some of your documents, then the problem is
not with Word's default settings but with those documents. Assuming that the
docs are in English rather than German, select the entire document (Ctrl+A)
and go to Tools | Language | Set Language. Select English (US) and clear the
check box for "Detect language automatically."
