Spell-check problem

I have a workbook used for data collection in which the main sheet is protected with UserInterfaceOnly. Users need to be able to spell-check their entries but Excel disables spell-checking when the sheet is protected. So I have made a spell-check available via a button and some code. However when running this, when the spell-checker queries a word it doesn't scroll to and highlight the cell the word appears in, as it does when run from the menu in unprotected mode. This still happens if I unprotect the sheet in the code immediately before running the spell-check. The spell-check otherwise works as expected.
This is unhelpful and frustrating to users and I can't see any reason for it.
Does anyone know of any way around this? We're using Excel 2003.
