Speed Up Defrag

My C drive of 80GB takes over 4 hrs to defrag, it has 65% free space. How
can I speed up defragging this drive.

Thanks for any assistance.

Using the XP Native Defrag or a 3rd Party utility ?

If all content exists on a single partition - You're unlikely to improve
the Defrag time. Using data segmentation (Different content on a
separate partition) would help since certain data doesn't fragment to
the extent the System partition will. Most times it's very large data
modules (Streets & Trips, Encarta, Game data modules) that cause
the processing time for Defrag to take so long. However, some
consideration is required when partitioning a Large drive. You need
to place data in diminishing importance/frequency of use further onto
the drive partitions.
C: \XP - D:\User Data - E- Multimedia (Music & My Pictures.

It's actually best to use separate drives for data segmentation.

Personally, I use Raxco's Perfect Disk Version 7.0. They offer a
30-Day fully functional trial. It' works best using both a Off-Line
defrag 1st, followed by a on line session. It fully supports the XP
Prefetch/Layout.Ini facility.

The download can be found at:

This works for me, but your mileage may vary:

Click on start > run > type msconfig and press enter
Then select startup tab and click on disable all. Reboot and defrag. If
you have enough free space on your hard drive, it should go much faster.
When finished, run msconfig again, and enable all startup items you had
enabled before.

Hey, Stan
First way. MAKE A RESTORE POINT. REBOOT. TURN OFF SCREENSAVER. SET all
Power options to NEVER,( Click "Power..." bottom of same tab). "OK"/"Apply"
your way out.
Run Disk Cleaner [Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk
Cleanup]:
Check- "Temporary Internet Files","Temp files", & "Recycle Bin" (ONLY) on
first Tab. Uncheck others you're unsure of.[Downloaded Program Files may be
useful to some programs] Don't run it yet.
Click the 2nd,"More" tab, then click the bottom button "System Restore"
-then "Cleanup". Click The "Apply/OK"'s as needed. [Note: This will REMOVE
all restore points except the one you just made, but if your system is fairly
OK, WHEN ELSE would you restore it TO? Reboot when its done.
Google search for- SpeeDefrag download. Run SpeeDefrag.
What it does is reboot your System, then run Windows Defrag as soon as
windows Restarts, but BEFORE programs and their Services are loaded.(Much
Less load on your Processor) Then it shuts the system down/off. [You can
start it and go to bed.]
This cut My Defrag time in half. [Currently 10GB on a 40GB drive(7200RPM),
1.7GHz Celeron Processor]
Second way.[I use, now] Do all up to getting SpeedDefrag. Instead of it, go
to - Start>Run>msconfig.
Click the Startup tab. Click "Disable All" button at the bottom, if you are
afraid you might need one of these programs, leave it checked or click Cancel
and use SpeeDefrag instead.
Click the Services tab. Near the bottom, find and check "Hide all Microsoft
Services". Remaining Services should be much fewer; Click "Disable All".
Same as above, if you are afraid, press Cancel, and use SpeeDefrag.
["Better Safe Than 'OOHHH,Noooo...,NOOOooo...!NOOOooo...!'"]
REBOOT to have changes take effect. Click the OK button on the msconfig
screen that pops up on reboot;this is a reminder to change settings back and
will pop up at each reboot until you're done.
Additional for the Paranoid/TakeNoChances Crowd: Your Firewall and
Antivirus are now OFF for all intents&purposes. Go to Control Panel>Network
Connections right- click your internet Connection(s), and "Disable" them if
you feel safer that way. Or UNplug your connection at the computer if that
suits you better.['Puter should be OFF "they" say.]
Run the DeFrag.
Now, Start>Run> type; msconfig> click NORMAL STARTUP on the General Tab.
Reboot at the prompt. Almost done. Control panel>NetworkConnections>
Rt.Click each connection in turn and choose "Enable".[Or replug connection]
Re-enable screensaver and power options.
Done . Looks long on here, but easy after 1 or 2 times, and worth it!
Also runs in HALF the time or Better.
Regards,DB
