Speech recognition tab

I have XP Pro w/o Word, i'm on a budget. I recently purchased a microphone to
accompany my webcam while chatting, however when I test the hardware by going
to start>settings>control panel>sounds & audio devices>voice & click test
hardware it doesn't register my voice in the mic. So i've gone through many
help suggestions which tells me to go to speech>speech recognition tab to
configure the mic & adjust the input level. No such tab exists so I'm trying
to follow the directions to add it. Well, first it doesn't give me the option
to change, only remove Windows XP, so I clicked Add/Remove features, &
looked under features to install to click on Office Shared Features, no such
option exists, so I can't even continue. I don't know what to do now. Please
help. I just want to have PC to PC convos. My phone bill is getting too high
but I enjoy my long distance convos.

Go into control panel and sound devices. It seems you may have your mic
muted. On some sound cards/motherboards the function of the mic socket
can toggle between centre speaker and mike, perhaps yours is on the
wrong setting so it doesnt 'see' a mic.
