Special Icons in Favorites - Preservation Of

G

This question refers to the original/proprietary bookmark icons many websites
display when you save in Favorites. This question also is sent with the
understanding that "cookies and cache" HAVE NOT been deleted, NOT DELETED. I
know if offline content is deleted, ALL proprietary icons disappear and have
to be restored by saving the bookmarks over again (THIS IS NOT THE CASE HERE).

Now my specific question is WHY do these icons disappear over and over, as
if they expire? ...and have to be saved over and over in order to re-appear.
And even after you save them again, they don't remain for very long. All day
long icons disappear for no apparent reason, I save them and an hour later
another batch of icons disappears, and revert to the Microsoft "e" icon. I
resave the bookmarks, the original icons return visible, and another batch of
other icons "disappear". It almost feels like the system cannot have more
than a certain number in memory. I know it's not so, because if I were to
re-save ALL my bookmarks, I can restore all the special icons, and all are
visible. Except that after a few minutes groups of them expire, and revert
to the "e"... It's like chasing something that will not "STAY PUT". Why does
this happen?

I am using a P3 processor with WIndows XP (no SP2 Service Pak). I have
plenty of memory and HD space.

I use Windows 2000 at work with an older PC, and these icons stay saved for
months before they occasionally expire and need to be restored. However the
maintenance is minimal. With the XP system I have at home, IE Explorer
"loses" the special icons repeatedly from one moment to the next... This is
very frustrating, especially since the purpose of these special icons is to
QUICKLY recognize the bookmark, without having to go reading all the
descriptions.

Thanks for reading this long question, and for the.... Solution

Hi Tony - These are known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally
will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

You need to get a program called FavOrg 1.4 here:

http://www.gratilog.net/anglais/internet/favorg.zip
http://uk.geocities.com/personel44/files/favorg.zip

or Version 1.2 here:

http://www.liemar.com.br/construindoseusite/downloads/favorg.zip
http://www.themes.myqth.com/Downloads/favorg.zip

(still free at these links) which will allow you to save them permanently
in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the stored icons.
(It will also verify whether your links in Favorites are stll good, BTW.)

If you want to read more about it first, go here:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,9883,00.asp

You can also try FavIoncizer, here:
http://www.codeproject.com/tools/faviconizer.asp?target=favicons I've used
this and it's quite good,. It will actually find about a third more than
FavOrg does (since it checks for referenced URL's), but lacks some of the
other cababilites of FavOrg, Recommended.

Thanks for the suggestion, I scanned the article, and it talks about IE5 and
IE4... I have noticed that each version of IE, (and Op.System) handles these
special icons differently... For example on a W2000 machine using IE6 at
work, these icons last for weeks before they need to be refreshed. Have you
seen any other articles as to this subject and IE6?

I have already tried deleting icons and manually re-entering the web address
and resaving to Favorites, the icons still expire quickly.

thanks

Thanks Jim, I try not to clear out the Temp Files folder, in order to
preserve these, a practice which may lead to other problems... but, I am very
very fond of these Favicons, as you can tell... I even expanded the size of
the allocated space of Temp Files Folder, which does not help. Even this
home PC on the same IE6, used to preserve these icons for a very long time-
it's only recently that they started to expire quickly and repeatedly... a
shame

As you continue to work on the computer and surf the web, you will get new
icons, files and cookies added to your TIF - as space is eaten up, older
files fall off the edge and are gone. That is why people are suggesting
FavOrg - it will go out and re-obtain the favorite icons and you can change
the storage location to a place other than the TIF folders

YW Tony - FWIW, both FavOrg and FavIoncizer work fine in IE6 under any
32-bit version of Windows. These are much better solutions than maintaining
a "bloated" TIF (which can cause other problems sometimes, and is not
recommended.)

Hi Tony - Just an addition to my last post - If you are going to try and
maintain a large TIF (or even if you're not :) ), then install
CacheSentry, free, here:
http://www.enigmaticsoftware.com/cachesentry/index.html

"This is a program that fixes serious bugs in the Internet Explorer cache
manager (versions 3.0 on up through and including Internet Explorer for
Windows XP, and IE6). This program basically takes over the job of managing
the cache from Internet Explorer, and the result is your web browsing
session will be more enjoyable. CacheSentry isn't like those "web
acceleration" programs that hook into IE and attempt to make guesses about
your browsing habits. CacheSentry simply does a better job of removing files
from the cache, and fixes a few other bugs present in most versions of
Internet Explorer."
