Speaker icon keeps disappearing in system tray

Of recent my speaker icon disappeared from my system tray. I uninstalled then
reinstalled the icon in Control Panel and it reappeared. But when I re-booted
it disappeared again. I tried various solutions on the Net but same problem.
Anyone had this same problem and has a working solution? Win XP Pro/SP2.
Thank you.

Your security software (or your network administrator if you're at work)
could be preventing the setting from sticking.

Line 30. Windows XP Doesn't Save User Settings

It's also possible your sound card drivers are missing or damaged. That
sometimes causes the speaker volume to be deselected in "Sounds and
Audio Devices". You might find help for that here:

Maybe it has got itself set to "Always Hide"? Right click the ">" on the
edge of the system tray and select "Customize Notifications...".

Or it might be "Hide when inactive", although you'd expect it to appear
for a while when booting.

Thanks for the responses. I tried the Kelly's Korner solutions but I have the
same problem.
