Speaker icon dissapeared

Somehow the speaker icon that appears in the status bar of my notebook next
to the clock disappeared. How can I bring it back?

start
control panel
sound
pick box [x] place.....taskbar
-----done----------------

Right click on an empty area of your taskbar.
Select Properties
Uncheck "Hide inactive icons"

OR

Click "Customize"

Click on any item listed and select from the pull down
menu how you want it to appear.

If that doesn't work:

Click on Start
Select/Click on Control Panel
Click on Sounds Speech and Audio Devices
Click on Sounds and Audio Devices
Check/Click "Place volume icon in the taskbar"
Click Apply
Click ok
and close all the windows to return to your desktop.
