spam getting through in droves

Hi,

I am wondering what is going on?, I am receiving stacks of unwanted spam
even though my outlook junk mail settings are set to deny any such
intrusion. I can't figure it out, this has only recently happened as all of
my junk mail was being successfully thwarted using the settings that I have
listed below.

I Do, repeat Do have the latest updates for the junk mail filter.

I am using OL 2003 with all updates in place all junk mail filters etc etc.
I have my Junk mail options set to safe lists only and the permanently
delete mail suspected as being junk checked, I also have the dont turn on
links checked.

The top level domains are blocked accordingly as are the encodings

In account settings>>Change>>>more settings>>>Advanced, I have the leave a
copy of mail on the server for 10 days checked and the delete mail when mail
is deleted from the deleted folder is unchecked.

Outlook's filters can only do so much without being overly aggressive and
having false positives. I use a third party tool (SpamBayes) to augment
Outlook and have been pretty spam free for a couple of years. It is free
and available from sourceforge.net.

It takes a while to train but if you have a good store of spam messages, it
helps the training process.

thanks Milly,

I have just run it for the first time and it directed 15 (suspected) spams
to the suspected spam junk folder, what do I do with it when it gets
directed to this folder? I went through each mail and labled it as spam, it
was then directed to my outlook junk mail folder. Does this mean that I have
successfully trained it to recognise those 15 mails as spam? Have I done it
correctly?

Well, yes and maybe. The filter works on heuristics, not on anything actually in the to, from or header. It recognizes the type of email and will look for that type in the future if you marked it as spam. A better write up is available on the SpamBayes site. They do a very good job explaining it so I will leave it to them.
