space bar after quotes

WEhen adding quotes in Word 2003, I have to press the space bar to show the
quote. Can this be changed to be like other puncuation, and just press the
key once as with explanation?

You have enabled an international keyboard layout. Check the settings in
Windows Control Panel | Keyboard | Regional Options.
