SP2 / windows update

After haveing trouble with disk check then not being able to run windows
update and tryng everything you all mentioned to me here, then getting
nowhere with windows update help and support I just did a total restore of my
computer with all the disks. After I restored I checked for and downloaded
all my virus (norton) updates then did microsoft office updates. This is
where the trouble started. It downloaded SP3 updates then started freezing up
my computer. Couldnt fix this so I restored again, this time I did my virus
updates ran a full scan then downloaded all of windows updates. Took forever
but SP2 is now installed (for about 3 hours) now and seems to be working
great. I did a new windows update check and got 1 more critical update. It
also recomended updating Office. I did a scan for updates and it wants to
download and install SP3. Is there any harm in not doing this? I would hate
to have to restore and go through all of this again. I also got a pop up that
said windows messenger needed a patch. I went to that page and it wants
$20.00 for a patch. Has anybody heard of this? Why should I pay microsoft or
whoever for a patch to fix there program? That I never use. Is there a way to
stop windows messenger from even starting and is there any harm in stopping
it from starting? I also installed my new Norton 2005 firewall and so far
everything seems to be going great. I think it will take a while to figure it
all out but it seems fine so far.
Thanks for any help or comments.

disable windows messenger in services. it's not needed .or
run a full firewall.not windows xp firewall.
and delay the service pack 3 ,unless it says it is
critical. then wait about a week in case there is a bug.
and temporarily disable antivirus while installing.
