SP2 still showing after removal

Hi,

I am using XP Home Edition with Cakewalk Sonar and I had been having
problems with my cpu and sonar since my upgrade to SP2. The cpu was running
too high and the system was unstable so I decided to remove SP2. I had no
problem uninstalling SP2 from the install/remove programs in control panel.
I restarted the computer and XP was showing as service pack 1, Sonar was
working perfectly well - no flickering, no instability, no blue screens, no
dropouts, it was recording with no hiccups or glitches, it was brilliant I
was so happy until I did something really stupid.

I had been clearing out some unused files in the install/remove programs in
the control panel and noticed that the SP2 hot fixes were still there so I
decided that as I no longer had SP2 I didn't need them so I started to delete
from the bottom up - each time restarting the computer to make sure
everything still worked. The third hot fix was deleted and my system
wouldn't reboot, I tried twice and had to use the F8 key to reboot in
safemode then restore my computer to an earlier time.

The problem I have now is that the system is showing up as XP Home Edition
SP2 again but when I go into the control panel to try to remove it tells me
it has already been removed. Sonar and the cpu are also behaving as if SP2
is still there with the dropouts back and glitches. I have tried
reinstalling SP2 so that I can remove it again but I still get the same
message indicating that it has already been removed.

Can I reinstall XP SP1 from my CD and still retain all my files?

Thanks

Vikki;
The hotfixes marled SP2 do not indicate SP-2 is installed, in fact they
indicate SP-2 is not installed.
The SP2 indicates they will be replaced by SP-2 once insrtalled since they
are incorporated in SP-2.

Go to Windows Update and install all updates other than SP-2
If you attempt to install SP-1, you may as well go with SP-2.
But first make sure the computer is ready for SP-2 (this link applies to
SP-1 as well except where obvious.)

Check with the manufacturers of Cakewalk Sonar for SP-2 compatibility.

For the CPU, see if the motherboard/computer manufacturer recommends a BIOS
upgrade.
Updated chipset or other drivers may be necessary.
These and other possibilities should be explored before deciding not to go
with SP-2.

Hi Jupiter,

SP2 effects Sonar 5 PE that's why I decided to remove it. With SP2 Sonar
was unstable causing increases in CPU processing and other problems when
recording. When the OS reverted back to SP1 it worked perfectly, it was my
removing the SP2 hot fixes that stuffed everything up again. I except the
fact that SP2 is not installed but the XP and Sonar seem to think it is and
all my original problems are back.

My question is, if I reload XP SP1 from my recovery CD-rom will it sort out
the problem and put my OS back to XP SP1 or is there a repair tool on the
disk somewhere that will repair SP2 so that I can delete it again?

Thanks

Vikki
