SP2 no-boot-up, Possibly a Registry Problem

I unsuccessfully installed SP2 and now that system won't boot. I've
already posted about this in detail.

An XP repair-install stops with error code
0x0000007B, which is described on
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324103
(This is different error code from what some other people have
reported.)

When I did a chat to MS SP2 support

the tech said it was a registry problem, but he wasn't allowed to advise
on editing the registry. Another more-senior tech would call me.

I'm dying to find out what the solution is.

The repair install didn't work, so it would have to be a fresh install.
First, I would have to back up everything important. That's a job in
itself because I'm not setup for it.

And I'm afraid after I do the fresh install and then I try to install
SP2, the same thing will happen. I think there must be something
incompatible somewhere (the mainboard, Shuttle AN35(N) Ultra, is new for
me). I'd like to find out what exactly the problem is.

But yes, a fresh install solves just about everything. If I don't figure
out what's wrong by this evening, it's fresh install time.

I have CPU Type AMD Athlon XP-A, 2079 MHz (6.25 x 333) 2800+
and my BIOS is up-to-date. So the particular issues you linked to don't
apply to me. The other situations on the page don't either. However, the
page does cover most of the SP2 issues I've read about.

I've given up on trying to repair the XP installation on the drive I
installed SP2 on. Once I figure out how to organize my data (there's no
point in backing-up everything), I'm going to fresh install XP. (I can
see all the data on the problem drive because I now have it as a slave
in a working system.)

I've been delaying, waiting for a call back from MS, but they must be
overwhelmed. They're way overdue on the call-back, and the email they
did send me just generally offered the fixes that everybody already
knows about, like on the link above.

After I reinstall XP, I will attempt again to install SP2. If somebody
wants to be up on what's happening to XP, you have to have SP2 and be
familiar with it. I wouldn't recommend a casual user to play with it,
though - unless they can afford to have the machine down for a while.

Do you have a P4 Prescott CPU. If so, diable cache in BIOS and unintall SP2,
Then re-enable cache and do without SP2 until Micro$oft get their act
together. Can also be a problem with some SIS chipsets,

I did get an email from Herry Han at MS. It was full of disingenuous
concern, "I am deeply sorry…" etc., and he apparently wasn't paying
attention at all. His suggestions, although they dealt with SP2, were
irrelevant. Maybe it was an automated response.

I'm beginning to wonder if the first tech I chatted with didn't know
what he was talking about. He said my no-boot-up was a registry
problem, but it was "beyond his boundaries" to advise me on the issue.

As I said elsewhere, I've given up on figuring out what went wrong or
how to fix it. I'm just going to fresh install. I haven't done it yet
because there's no urgency. I still have a working machine by using an
old XP drive as a boot.

My recommendation on SP2: Take _every_ precaution first, and don't do
it unless you are _prepared_ to fresh install XP.

stop bitching about your ineptness.
