SP2 install issues

When I try to install SP2 I get an Access denied message and the installation
fails. There is no number for the message. The installation stops about half
way through at SP2.CAB. Some SP2 features are installed but some like the
firewall aren't. Also the PC acts strangely on boot with a long boot time and
double icons.

Hi,

With regards to the problem I have come across useful link on microsoft
website. You can refer to it

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148

The problem you are facing generally happens because of not getting proper
privileges that an administrator has.

Hope this helps you !

I deleted the keys that were causing the errors--a .vbs key and an .AudioCD key. But the install stopped again about halfway through. The setup log showed another error--HKCR\vnd.ms.radio. I deleted that one. But this could go on and on. Can I grant full permission to the entire HKCR folder?

I'm not an expert on this installation issue so I don't know how to answer
that. If it was me, I would image the system and try it.

I can create a system backup. BTW, if I put in a system backup from 6 months ago because I am having problems with the current install, what happens to all the recently installed programs?

Depending on what the system backup consists, you would loose all the
changes and any software installed after that time. What kind of backup are
you talking about?

When I say image, I mean using a drive imaging program such as Acronis True
Image to save a compressed image of the system to an external USB hard
drive. Now you have something you can restore, that's current, so you can
try these changes to the system. Personally I would never try an OS upgrade
such as installing a service pack without first imaging the system so there
is something to fall back on.
